LATEST NEWS AND RUMORS

December 18, 1998

According to the music television channel that matters (you figure it out), joining a long list of praiseworthy folks to appear on Buzzworthiest: MTV's All-Time Buzz-Clip Countdown is one of scene's brighter celebrities Jerry Cantrell. A 'new and revealing interview' is to be expected.

The show will be aired by MTV at following times:

Saturday, December 19 - 12:00 pm and
Sunday, December 20 - 4:00 pm (eastern time)

November 27, 1998

Although the following update is, in all fairness, not entirely Jerry Cantrell related, I could probably do worse than give it a mention. From Rolling Stone Online:

Just Another Bombtrack

Layne Staley's self-imposed rock & roll exile is apparently over. Earlier this fall, the singer regrouped with his Alice In Chains band mates to record two new songs for an upcoming box set (tentatively due out next spring), and now he has joined an ad hoc all-star group of musicians to record a cover of Pink Floyd's Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2 for the soundtrack to the teen sci-fi horror film 'The Faculty', out on Columbia Records on Dec. 22.

Staley, along with Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, erstwhile Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins, Porno For Pyros bassist Martyn Lenoble and keyboardist/producer Matt SerleticDevil's court jester revealed (Matchbox 20), are the first group of musicians ever to receive permission by former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters to record the 1980 anthem for an album, according to a source close to the project.

In addition to the Pink Floyd cut, a slew of other anthem songs, new and old, will appear on the album: Soul Asylum and Creed each take a crack at an Alice Cooper song by contributing School's Out and I'm Eighteen, respectively; Sheryl Crow offers the previously unreleased track Resuscitation; and Oasis will contribute Stay Young from 'The Masterplan'. Other songs expected to make the cut include Shawn Mullins' version of David Bowie's Changes; the Offspring's The Kids Aren't All Right from 'Americana'; Garbage's Medication from 'Version 2.0'; D Generation's Helpless from their forthcoming 'Through The Darkness'; Stabbing Westward's Haunting Me from 'Darkest Days'; Flick's Maybe Someday from 'The Perfect Kellulight'; and new Columbia artist Neve contributing It's Over Now. Additionally, an instrumental version of Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2, recorded with the supergroup minus Staley will also be included on the soundtrack.

The film, directed by Robert Rodriguez ('Desperado', 'From Dusk 'Til Dawn') and penned by Kevin Williamson ('Scream'), stars Elijah Wood, Jon Stewart, Selma Hayak and R&B sensation Usher in his film debut. It hits theaters on Christmas day.

For those who didn't get a chance to see Sunday's showing of Behind the Music with Metallica, a note of interest might be that VH1 will be re-broadcasting the show at 8:00 pm tonight and 3:00 pm (eastern time) on Saturday. The reason you may want to be bothered is, of course, the fact that included in the show is a short (over-before-you-can-say "friends-don't-let-friends-get-friends'-haircuts") interview with Jerry Cantrell. Your lives will never be the same.

November 22, 1998

Ok, so it's been while, but does/should that still surprise you?.. Either way, here's some news:

As his ill-luck would have it, Jerry ended up losing both of his award-battles when this year's Billboard Music Video Awards came to pass in the beginning of November. Marilyn Manson's Dope Show topped the Best Hard Rock/Metal Clip category, while Limp Bizkit's Counterfeit snatched the award for the Best New Hard Rock/Metal Artist Clip.

Meanwhile, if a prospect of spending one hour in company of world's most inspiring personality (aka Lars Ulrich) does not frighten you, tune into VH1's Behind The Music with Metallica which is scheduled to premiere tonight at 9:00 and 11:00pm (eastern time). The show will evidently include "interviews with the band, friends, family members, plus Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy, and Jerry Cantrell." Thanks to Josh for the info.

And speaking of Metallica, reports indicate that their newly recorded cover of Garage IncLynyrd Skynyrd's Tuesday's Gone - which is due to appear on 'Garage Inc', their soon-to-be-released double LP of cover tunes - will feature guest appearances from Skynyrd's guitarist Gary Rossington, Primus' Les Claypool, ex-Faith No More guitarist Jim Martin, Corrosion Of Conformity's Pepper Keenan and a highly regarded Metalli-acquaintance, Jerry Cantrell. 'Garage Inc' is currently scheduled for a November 24 release. More info and complete track listing is available here.

Finally, if you were wondering what was up with Alice, here's an update. From Sonicnet's Music News Of The World:

Members of grunge-rockers Alice In Chains plan to return to an L.A. studio this weekend [that would be November 14-15] to finish two new songs expected to appear on a box set tentatively scheduled for mid-'99, according to a source close to the band. The group began work on the songs, its first new effort in more than three years, in September. A label spokesperson said the long-rumored box set, which could contain as many as three CDs, as well as a videotape and extensive booklet, is not currently on the Columbia Records release-schedule for the first quarter of '99.

October 25, 1998

I know this is getting old and redundant, but for the sake of keeping record it should be noted that last Friday's show @ the Ogden Theatre was also cancelled. Still no official word on why, although the ever-eminent rumors suggest that poor ticket sales is, in fact, the reason. Thanks to Brian Dyet for the info.

To remain consistent, here's more bad news. From Billboard:

Jerry Cantrell has canceled his appearance at the Billboard Music Video Awards because he's in the process of re-scheduling his canceled tour dates, and the re-scheduled dates will prevent him from being at the awards show. The new concert dates haven't been announced yet, but stay tuned.

Gotta love them corporate promises. Thanks to JosieCat

October 20, 1998

At least two more dates (today's show at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis and tomorrow's performance at Bottleneck, Lawrence) have been cancelled for as yet unrevealed reasons (poor ticket sales? exhaustion?). Since no reschedules of these two shows are planned, you might want to consider returning your tickets. Thanks to Chris Buchinger for the alert.

On a happier note, it appears that in addition to being nominated for Billboard Music Video Awardstwo awards in this year's Billboard Music Video Awards (scroll down for details), Jerry will also be taking part in presenting the show on Nov. 6 at the Sheraton Universal Ballroom in Universal City, CA. For those feeling rich, a note of interest might be that a limited number of awards show tickets will be available at $80 a piece. For details, visit Billboard Online at www.billboard.com or call 212-536-5002.

And if you're still feeling puzzled, here's an extra-clarifying note from (figuratively speaking) the mouth of Billboard itself:

Jerry will NOT be performing at the Billboard Music Video Awards. He's going to be a presenter.

The Billboard Music Video Awards show is NOT on TV. The Billboard Music Awards show IS on TV. A lot of people get these two awards shows confused.

The Billboard Music Video Awards are about music videos, and the Billboard Music Awards are about which artists have sold the most records and gotten the most airplay that year. The 1998 Billboard Music Awards show will be held Dec. 7 in Las Vegas and it will be televised on Fox.

The Billboard Music Video Awards are part of the Billboard Music Video Conference. The cost of admission is what it is because it's an event mainly for professionals in the music industry. This is not a concert.

For more information on the Billboard Music Video Conference & Awards, go to Billboard Online at www.billboard.com.

Now you know.

October 15, 1998

And while on the subject of cancelled dates, the Nashville show which was scheduled for October 19 is the latest one to be scraped off the list. Sadly. Thanks to Manny... for passing along the info, that is.

On an unrelated note, the 1998 Billboard Music Video Awards' 'blue ribbon panels' have nominated Cut You In (the video) for Best Hard Rock/Metal Clip and Best New Hard Rock/Metal Artist Clip. Rivaling nominees are: (for Best Hard Rock/Metal Clip) Aerosmith's Pink, Marilyn Manson's The Dope Show, Monster Magnet's Space Lord and Jimmy Page & Robert Plant's Most High; and (for Best New Hard Rock/Metal Artist Clip) Big Wreck's The Oaf, Fuel's Shimmer, Limp Bizkit's Counterfeit and Sprung Monkey's Get 'Em Outta Here (Version 2). The victorious ones will be announced Nov. 6 at the Sheraton Universal Ballroom in Universal City, CA.

More on Alice. From Sonicnet's Music News Of The World:

Alice In Chains Members Record Two More Songs

Less than a month after the band reunited to record for the first time in years, members of Seattle metal-edge rock band Alice In Chains were at it again this week, putting down tracks for two new songs, among the first from the group in more than three years.

Some of the platinum-selling group's members convened in a Seattle studio earlier this week to work on a pair of new songs, according to band manager Susan Silver. While often-elusive singer Layne Staley was there, according to Silver, the Seattle sessions did not include guitarist Jerry Cantrell -- who is preparing to launch a solo tour in support of his recently released solo debut, 'Boggy Depot', with an Oct. 1 show at First Avenue in Minneapolis...

If anything, this appears to be a near-perfect excuse to go out and get drunk. In my humble opinion.

September 6, 1998

Due to the fact that most of the info below is as old as your grandmother's dog (so much for the 'Latest News' blurb), the intention is to make this as straight-to-the-point as possible.

Thusly, during the eternity separating July 7 (previous update of this page) and today Jerry Cantrell has:

Completed 24 more shows as summer's main pre-Metalli-attraction. Reports indicate above-average performances, rather indifferent audiences ("Get on your feet! I haven't seen this many people sitting on their asses since I took my niece to see 'The Lion King'!" - Jerry Cantrell) and a consistent setlist. Namely:

1. Devil By His Side
2. No Excuses
3. My Song
4. What The Hell Have I? or Heaven Beside You
5. Between
6. Got Me Wrong
7. Them Bones
8. Keep The Light On or Settling Down
9. Cut You In
10.Brain Damage/Eclipse

Promised a second album by mid-next year.

Got through making a video for My Song, which, if Gods of Music Television allow, might even visit a television near you. On special occasions.

Gone in an out of studio to do some work with Alice In Chains. Nothing definite as of yet. Here's the story according to Rolling Stone.

Announced more post-summer club shows (possibly a short European tour). Check 'Tour' for definite dates.

Has been spotted crying out the name of Lars Ulrich in panic during a somewhat turbulent afternoon nap earlier this month.

July 7, 1998

Well, if we were to believe the good folks at http://www.jerrycantrell.com120 Minutes (which we probably should), Jerry will be showing up on MTV's 120 Minutes on Sunday, July 13. Might be worth the effort... hell, if in a good mood, they might even air Cut You In...

In slightly related news, Metallica will be appearing on SonicNet's chat tomorrow (July 8), at 6:00 PM EDT. I am almost certain that Mr. Lars Ulrich will be more than happy to answer all your Jerry Cantrell related questions, so feel absolutely free to bug the hell outta him.
